THE POSITION: Under general supervision from a Supervisor or Crew Leader in the Public Works Department, performs a variety of construction and maintenance activities to the City streets, alleys and facilities, sanitary sewer system. Operates and maintains gasoline, diesel and CNG powered vehicles and equipment including, but not limited to, light to medium rollers, tractors and loaders; operates and maintains other specialized equipment; performs other duties as assigned. Operates and performs daily inspections on trucks, tractors, skip loaders, water truck, street sweeper and, as assigned, other light to medium equipment such as backhoes, sewer Vactor asphalt roller, jack hammers, concrete saws, grinders, trenchers, sprayers, painting and sewer cleaning equipment: may service and perform minor repairs to vehicles and equipment; assists in the pouring and finishing of concrete slabs and walks; performs unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled labor in construction and maintenance of streets and street components; hauls, spreads and rakes asphalt for new or repaired thoroughfares; determines configuration of and sets up equipment and barriers; performs traffic painting tasks; installs and maintains warning and directional signs: maintains manholes, sewers, and storm drains; and may be required to apply pesticides and/or herbicides. Sewer vactor/jetter, CCTV inspection truck, and other sewer cleaning equipment. Operates and maintains other specialized equipment including but not limited to a remote, sewer inspection crawler; performs manual and semiskilled work in flushing, clearing, maintaining sewer and storm drainage, pipelines, and culverts; performs or assists in excavation and repair or replacement of sewer gravity lines; places traffic barriers and warning signs and directs traffic as necessary; assists in notifying residents of sewer system work which may affect their lines, and cooperates with other agencies on repairs; maintains manholes, sewers, and storm drains; assists in emergency Public Works repairs and maintenance including work in other sections of the Department; individuals in this classification may be assigned to work independently and perform assigned activity without detailed instructions as to specific procedures to be followed. This position may supervise a maintenance crew in the absence of a Crew Leader and assist in the training of personnel.
QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of gasoline, diesel and alternative fuel powered construction and maintenance equipment, including, but not limited to, operation, adjustment and care of a sewer vactor/jetter; methods, practices, equipment and materials used in sewer construction and maintenance; hand tools, power tools and other equipment; and safe work practices and procedures. Skills/Abilities – Operate motorized equipment efficiently and safely, including, but not limited to a remote sewer inspection crawler; follow written and oral instructions; perform manual labor and strenuous tasks; perform semi-skilled and skilled duties; work safely and maintain effective working relationships; assist in the training and supervision of staff in equipment operation and various aspects of street and sewer system maintenance and repair and other public works construction and maintenance. Education and Experience - Any combination of experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be: three years experience in construction, maintenance work or related labor or skilled work, and completion of high school education or GED. Physical Effort- Requires some physical effort including bending, stooping, climbing and lifting items weighing 20-100 lbs. Tasks may be performed in inclement weather. Licenses – Possession of a valid CA class “B” driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record is required at the time of appointment and is a condition of continued employment.
SELECTION PROCESS: Candidates, whose education and experience are determined to best meet the City’s needs, will be invited to an Assessment of Qualifications. An applicant must pass all components of the examination process to be considered for the position.
