POSITION The City of Novato is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Maintenance Worker to perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City streets, parks, and related facilities. This recruitment is to fill current vacancies in the Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department and to create an eligibility list to be used for potential future vacancies. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from supervisory and management staff. May exercise technical supervision over less experienced staff within assigned work unit. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThis is the entry level class in the Maintenance Worker series. Incumbents initially perform the more routine duties assigned to positions in this series and work under close supervision. However, as experience is gained, incumbents are expected to perform the full range of duties as assigned with increasing independence. This class is distinguished from the Senior Maintenance Worker level in that the latter performs the most complex duties and has lead supervisory responsibility.EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS--Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Essential Functions:When assigned to any area:
Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
Perform heavy manual labor including lifting heavy weights, stooping, bending and twisting.
Perform routine preventive maintenance on equipment as assigned.
When assigned to Street Maintenance:
Perform street maintenance duties; operate construction and maintenance equipment such as trucks, tractors, backhoes, loaders, and rollers for a variety of construction and maintenance operations involving streets, sidewalks and gutters.
Spread asphalt to patch and repair streets.
When assigned to Street Maintenance:
Use concrete cutting and breaking equipment; operate a jackhammer; pour and finish concrete; construct concrete forms and perform rough carpentry work.
Set up traffic safety devices such as cones, signs and barricades as necessary.
Maintain catch basins and storm drain pipes.
Perform emergency street, sewer, storm drain or other public service maintenance work as required.
Paint or stencil traffic directional markings including crosswalks, safety loading zones, bus stops, parking and center lines and railroad and school crossings.
Lay out, fabricate and install regulatory, guide, warning and construction signs; straighten and reset street signs and parking meter poles.
Paint and stripe barricades and guard rails; cut and prepare stencils; maintain, clean and repair painting equipment and stencils.
When assigned to Parks and Islands Maintenance:
Operate mowers, tractors, trenchers, boom truck, chain saw, stump grinder, chipper, vehicles and equipment; utilize a variety of hand and power tools in park landscape maintenance work; assist in routine maintenance of such equipment.
Perform the trimming of trees by climbing or utilizing an aerial bucket; grind and remove tree stumps.
Prepare and maintain athletic fields, swimming pools and related facilities; clean restrooms and pick up litter around parks and medians.
Perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of irrigation systems.
Water, mow, weed, trim, renovate and fertilize lawns; prune trees and shrubs; plant trees, flowers and shrubs.
Rake leaves and clean walks, fields, courts and other facilities.
When assigned to Parks and Islands Maintenance:
Perform skilled and semi-skilled tasks involving the maintenance, construction and repair of park and recreational facilities; construct and maintain fencing, sheds, planters and other park structures; perform graffiti removal tasks as required.
Apply herbicides, fungicides and pesticides safely; maintain records of fertilizers and chemicals used.
Marginal Functions:
May assist in other sections of the Department as necessary.
Perform related duties as assigned.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of:
Methods, techniques and procedures related to parks and street maintenance.
Traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in truck and equipment operations.
Purposes and uses of a variety of vehicles, equipment, power tools and hand tools including motorized, pneumatic and hydraulic equipment.
Hazardous material and proper safety requirements.
Uses and purposes of general construction tools and equipment.
Safe work practices.
Ability to:
Perform semi-skilled and skilled tasks in a variety of construction and maintenance activities.
Perform heavy manual labor.
Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
Work effectively in the absence of close supervision.
Use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools and equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner.
Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Experience and Training Guidelines Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:Experience:Two years of either street or park construction and maintenance experience.Training:Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.License or CertificatePossession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license. A current, valid California Class A Driver's License is desirable. WORKING CONDITIONS Environmental Conditions:Outside environment; exposure to noise, grease, fumes and heavy equipment; may work at heights; work in inclement weather conditions; exposure to hazardous material. Physical Conditions:Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing, walking, bending, climbing or crouching for prolonged periods of time; and moderate to heavy lifting; communicating with others, reading and writing, and operating assigned equipment and vehicles.ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
