The City of Torrance Public Works, Traffic and Lighting Division is looking to add a self-motivated and career minded individual to their team. Under general supervision, the Traffic Signal Technician maintains, repairs and performs modifications to traffic signal control equipment, wiring systems, outdoor overhead lighting and other electrical devices and performs other related work as required.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience that would have provided the knowledge and skills required is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
Two years of experience in the maintenance, repair, and installation of electrical and electronic equipment that includes at least one year of experience in the maintenance and repair of traffic control equipment. Satisfactory completion of college level courses in electronics and/or computer programming may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.
LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATES
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license.
Level One International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Certificate within six (6) months of appointment (once obtained, must possess and maintain).
International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level II Signal Electrician – Field Certificate is desirable.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
In addition to the minimum requirements, the most successful candidate will possess:
Experience with signalized traffic control devices, preferably Econolite type controllers in a municipal setting;
Knowledge of Traffic Management Operations;
Excellent written and oral communications skills;
Ability to establish effective working relationships;
Strong technical experience in electrical and electronics;
Good understanding of OSHA guidelines, safety procedures, rules and regulations;
Good interpersonal skills, time management skills and strong customer service skills;
Ability to read, understand and interpret specifications, diagrams and schematics;
Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision; and
Ability to operate an aerial lift and crane and perform duties at considerable heights.
Possession of a Class B license is highly desirable.
