The City of Laguna Beach is excited to announce that it is now accepting applications for the position of Maintenance Lead Worker located in our Public Works Department. Under general direction from a division manager, the Maintenance Lead Worker directs and supervises the work of an assigned crew and performs journey level tasks in parks and building maintenance and repair, directing and supervising a crew(s) performing landscape maintenance in our parks, beaches, and downtown commercial areas. Lead Workers are responsible for building a team environment, developing and mentoring staff, teaching and guiding less experienced staff, and managing conflict amongst crew workers.

Ideal candidates will possess:
College coursework in horticulture
At least 4 years of experience in public works or similar commercial landscape maintenance
At least 2 years of experience in irrigation system maintenance, programming, and repair
At least 2 years of experience leading a crew of maintenance workers
Experience with maintaining landscaping for commercial/public spaces
Knowledge of tree care
Qualified Applicator Certificate
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Oversees downtown and/or City landscape maintenance and performs work alongside other maintenance employees: General landscape maintenance including planting, trimming, mowing, fertilizing, weeding, mulching, programming and repairing irrigation systems, etc.Maintain and clean park amenities including benches, barbecues, volleyball courts, basketball courts, athletic fields, sidewalks, pathways, restrooms, planters, hardscape, litter removal, etc. Maintain and perform minor repairs of playgrounds and fitness equipment Applies fertilizers and herbicides as directed. Trains crew members. Directs purchases. Works under minimal supervision. Plans, organizes, and schedules work crews Responds to emergency calls as required (may be required to respond during non-scheduled work hours, including evenings, holidays and weekends.)Oversees field maintenance of tools and equipment. Advises on safety precautions and conducts safety meetings. Maintains crew records, prepares performance evaluations, counsels employees and makes recommendations on disciplinary action Equipment operation and maintenance particular to this division, including public restroom cleanliness and maintenance. Provides emergency response, attends safety meetings, uses power and hand tools appropriate for this division. Tools, equipment, and vehicles used include: chainsaw, mower, hedger, trencher, rubber tire loader, backhoe, sand sifter, spray equipment, pressure washer, dump truck, aerial lift truck.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent, preferably supplemented by coursework in supervision or management and related technical areas.
Experience: Considerable experience (at least 4 years) in the performance of public works or similar commercial landscape maintenance work at a journey level or higher (or two years as a Maintenance Worker II in the appropriate area with the City of Laguna Beach); minimum of six months experience in supervising or overseeing the work of others (2 years of experience leading crews is desirable). Experience effectively dealing with the public.
License/Certificate Requirements:
A valid California Class B driver's license with tank vehicle endorsement. Incumbents who are not in possession of a valid California Class A or B driver's license at the time of hire may be required to obtain the required commercial license with the necessary endorsements by the end of the twelve (12) month probationary period.Those in possession of a valid California Class A or B driver's license must not have an automatic transmission restriction or an air brake restriction.The incumbent must be able to provide a DMV printout, a current medical card and successfully pass a police background check. A fingerprint check with the State Department of Justice, a pre-placement medical exam and drug test are also required.Incumbents who are not in possession of a valid California Class A or B driver's license at the time of hire may be required to obtain the required commercial license with the necessary endorsements by the end of the twelve (12) month probationary period. Special Provision: Employee may respond to traffic emergencies as the primary "on call" staff member during scheduled and non-scheduled work hours, including evenings, holidays and weekends. Residency within 20 miles of Laguna Beach City limits is highly desired.
