Vacancy Situation: The District currently has two vacancies, both in the South County Trades Shop working out of Lake Chabot in Castro Valley. The hiring pools established as a result of this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancies and any additional vacancies that may occur during the one year life of the hiring pools.
Under general supervision, to perform skilled carpentry work in the construction, maintenance and repair of Park District buildings and structures.
Essential Functions:
Constructs, maintains and repairs various types of buildings.
Frames floors, walls, roofs, sheds, scaffolds, fences and other structures.
Constructs foundations, builds forms, places and finishes concrete.
Builds and repairs bridges and retaining walls.
Constructs cabinets, hangs doors and windows, applies siding, installs sheetrock, insulation and finish trim.
Keeps tools, materials and equipment in working condition.
Designs and drafts construction details, and makes estimates for new structures and repair work.
Advises in the selection of building materials.
Requisitions and stores building materials and supplies.
Keeps records and makes reports.
Consults with other trades crew.
Instructs apprentice carpenters and leads Park Ranger II assistants.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade, and completion of a recognized apprenticeship for carpenter, OR
Experience: Four years of experience in new construction or remodel as a journey level carpenter.
Additional Information:
Thorough knowledge of principles, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in carpentry. Familiarity with safety orders of the Industrial Accident Commission, and the Uniform Building Code. Skill in both framing and finished carpentry and the use of portable power and shop tools. Ability to calculate basic math to prepare rough construction drawings and make estimates for materials and labor. Knowledge to layout a foundation utilizing Level Transit or Builders Level. Ability to read blueprints and work from plans, interpret specifications, and recognize lumber types and grades; follow oral and written directions; keep records and make reports; and direct unskilled assistants. Strength and physical agility to lift and manipulate heavy construction materials and equipment. Ability to establish and maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work at all levels, including a culturally diverse general public, with a focus on quality service to internal staff and external customers and park users.
Conditions of Employment:
A valid driver's license is a condition of initial and continued employment in this classification.
Persons in this classification must be able to use a respirator in the performance of their work. In accordance with CAL OSHA respirator regulations, Title 8, 5144 (c) (g) (l) (A) (l.), incumbent shall not wear beards or long sideburns that impede the effectiveness of the respirator.

Selection Process:
The application materials for all applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be reviewed by a screening panel to select the best qualified for testing or interview. The Park District reserves the right to set up a written test, performance test, and/or other assessment procedures before or after the interview process. Possession of minimum qualifications does not guarantee an interview or invitation to test. Pursuant to the Federal Immigration and Reform Act of 1986, all applicants who are hired will be required to provide proof of identity and appropriate work authorization documents prior to commencement of employment. The individual chosen for hire must be able to pass a background check, including fingerprint check, and Park District medical examination prior to employment. The probationary period for this classification is nine (9) months.

Wages, hours, and other terms of conditions of employment are covered in an Agreement between the Park District and Local 2428.
