Fleet Maintenance Supervisor
The City of La Mesa invites interest for this exceptional key leadership/supervisory role - Fleet Maintenance Supervisor.
The selected candidate will be assigned to the Department of Public Works, and will supervise, assign, review, and participate in the work of staff responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties involved in the maintenance and repair of City vehicles and equipment, including light, medium, and heavy-duty automobiles, trucks and off-road construction equipment including patrol cars and fire apparatus. The selected candidate will also ensure work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures; and perform the more technical and complex tasks relative to fleet maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties involved in the maintenance and repair of municipal vehicles and equipment. Provide assistance and oversight to staff performing mechanical repairs and diagnoses of equipment and vehicles, equipment installations, rebuilds, and replacement and adjustment of major assemblies and complex components.
Schedule fleet maintenance activities and oversee a variety of programs, including: BIT inspections; hazardous materials, smog program and air quality control activities; preventative maintenance programs; underground storage tank and fuel delivery system inspections and maintenance; employee training and safety; and annual aerial lift testing.
Participate in the selection of fleet maintenance staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures.
Inspect work in progress and upon completion to assure that repairs, maintenance, and project activities are in accordance with City regulations, policies, and operating procedures and practices. Monitor work sites and ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures; respond to and resolve complex work and equipment problems.
Establish schedules and methods for providing fleet maintenance services; identify resource needs; review needs with appropriate management staff; allocate resources accordingly. Coordinate assigned maintenance activities with those of other divisions and outside agencies and organizations. Investigate complaints and recommend corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints.
Participate in the development of policies and procedures; monitor work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures; make recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards and procedures.
Participate in the preparation and administration of the fleet maintenance budget; submit budget recommendations; monitor expenditures. Prepare cost estimates for maintenance and repair activities; requisition necessary supplies and materials. Maintain time, materials, and equipment use records.
Oversee contract work and ensure compliance with specifications.
Order fuel and maintain all pertinent records and permits; order and receive parts, and maintain and manage inventory; prepare related reports.
Provide staff assistance to the Assistant Director of Public Works; participate on a variety of committees; prepare and present staff reports and other correspondence as appropriate and necessary.
Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in assigned maintenance field.
Respond to a variety of public works emergencies on an assigned stand-by shift; assess nature of problem and determine needed action; call in needed workers to perform repairs.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education/Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.
Experience:
Four years of experience performing journey-level vehicle and equipment maintenance work including one year of supervisory responsibility. Experience must have been obtained within the last 10 years.
License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid class C driver's license. Incumbents are required to obtain a class B driver's license within six months of initial appointment, and a class A driver's license within one year of initial appointment.
Examination Process
Interested applicants must submit an online application and supplemental questionnaire. This recruitment is scheduled to close on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at 8 a.m. Only those candidates whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the City will be invited to participate in the interview process. The examination process may consist of any or all of the following components: written examination, oral interview, and practical skills evaluation. Eligible candidates will be notified when testing dates have been established.
NOTE: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment medical evaluation, including drug screen, and background investigation.
